Coffee and vacation go hand in hand……heck, coffee and everything go hand in hand. In a coffee driven world we see many inventive ways to serve up that black gold, super food that many of us cannot begin a day (or any activity) without. “Hold on, my coffee is almost ready” rings through my house as I am heading for the next carpool run, homework question, meal prep, you name it. It is my lifesaver and my God given right as a mother to sip happily, greedily and contently on my favorite mug and feel the calm come over me as I begin my next task. Ok, might be a little exaggerated, but it is truly my guilty pleasure and I cherish it. Recently we were taking in the beauty of the Lake Wenatchee area near Leavenworth (Heaven!!!), kids and pups in tow, and to my absolute delight, in the most unexpected place, I looked up and saw the most beautiful sight in the form of a Lil Red truck (Hence the name, Lil Red’s), right next to an adorable Espresso stand. As my vehicle made a sudden correction along the road to our next adventure, I gave in to the urge and we enjoyed the best ‘coffee experience” we have had anywhere, bar none. The kids were thrilled by the massive homemade baked cookies. The sandwiches were simply amazing (reminded me of the ‘sammies’ I enjoyed in France, panini style yummines) The dogs were treated to a puppacino and a cookie treat and I was back in the loving folds of my favorite brew. Furthermore, a personal message scrawled on my cup (I wont give it away as they are personally made and part of the experience so you need to go get your own message) that set me on my way with a giggle and a smile. Oh Leavenworth, Lake Wenatchee, you are so blessed to have these lovely ladies (I could write about them for days!!) serving you so well!!! Please be good to them, they will happily make your day and your brew, with love and a smile.

Star gazing, invokes so many pleasant memories. I remember the first shooting star I ever saw as a child and I remember sharing these experiences with my kids and the excitement when they were the first to see one. We would pack up blankets, pillows and some snacks, lie out in the yard and watch for shooting stars and satellites. There is no better evening activity than ‘star gazing’ with the kids. The conversations that evolve are second to none. Imaginations run wild and stories come to life through the eyes of the ‘little ones’ especially. Recently I began taking my nieces and nephews up to the mountain tops to experience the same star gazing adventures, but without the city lights. There are so many quiet places and open landscapes here in our area, that lend themselves to one of the most memorable and ‘free’ adventures any kid can have, seeing a shooting star across a moonlit sky for miles and miles of open sky real estate. Being at a cabin has many advantages, but the ones that are least considered are the ones I remember the most. The beach at Lake Wenatchee is an excellent place to view the night time skies and listen to the water ‘licking’ the edge of the beach. Our kids played in the shallows, under a starry sky, until their lips were blue and we had to drag them out. To this day, it is one of the most cherished memories they share whenever they are together. There are so many reasons to love being in the Lake Wenatchee area, and so many reasons I try to keep my family coming here generation after generation. Star Gazing, just one of the best memories
There is no beter way to teach your kids, than to encourage first hand education. I loved home schooling and my kids still recall the many things that they learned while exploring the world and digging into their environment. The wildlife and nature opportunities for learning are endless and come to life so easily when you are out experiencing it all for your self. I love to plant an idea and then give the kids the place to seek the answers directly through exploration. Presenting ideas and facts to them, and then unleashing them in a place that offers the practical answers in a real life setting, is putting the power of discovery in their little hands. My kids loved to find “owl dropings’ and were facinated by the ‘real life adventure’ of uncovering skeletons of field mice within that ‘find’. Or coming across bear scat and identifying the life style of the bears simply by what they found within that as well. The excitement they experienced in these simple days were the beginning of a lifetime love of learning, that they exhibit even today. It was amazing how many things they would uncover for themselves and then insist on learning more about these things they saw once we got home. It sparked so many ways for me to teach them and they took the lead most of the time with eager excitment and anticipation, making it simple to teach them far beyond my intended plan and they retained the details and information so competely. One day in the woods provided weeks worth of educational matterials for us to take home and continue to discover and learn about. No better classroom than nature. Having the chance to live these experiences even though our real life in the city, made nature, wildlife and exploration such a tangible and effective way for my kids to learn and grow. There are so many great reasons to come to Lake Wenatchee and Leavenworth, the experiences are endless. Home schoolers welcome!!!
When the weather finally settles into a pattern of warm summer nights under starry skies, it’s hard not to think about camping trips and getting out in nature. No better place than Lake Wenatchee, Plain or Leavenworth. Although camping is a broad term, the whole idea of ‘camping’ opens up so many memories but can be a challenge to fit into our busy schedules. It is not always easy to pack and get organized for a weekend camping trip, so considering a cabin can be really appealing. There are numerous cabins to choose from that will take you back to the ‘gool ole’ days and remind you of visiting grand parents, playing til the sun goes down, fishing off a dock, trolling from the back of a row boat, s’mores and those starry nights. Many shining moments of my childhood are easily recalled whenever I daydream of summer camping trips. While crowed campgrounds actually have a flavor all their own (and drum up a multitude of happy memories), the idea of recreating family getaways can be daunting simply trying to manage all the gear and necessary items. I love being able to choose cabins in various areas that have all that we need already on site and available for our use. The kids love to choose their beds before tossing their stuff down and heading outside. We love teaching them some of the outdoor games that we enjoyed with our cousins (kick the can) and even cooking up some of the comfort foods we inhaled after playing hard and running free. As we grow older, recalling these moments became part of our family holiday gatherings, to reminisce about these adventures, laugh out loud and buildi on the stories year after year. My kids reminded me just the other day, the best part of family, was sitting around the table at Thanksgiving or Christmas and re-hashing the memories of childhood moments and adventures. They bond us to one another and keep our feet planted on the ground. Memories cannot be bought and cannot be shared around the dinner table, unless they actually happened and we were all there to remember them later.
